What Started as a Siding Call Turned Into a Full Renovation

The homeowners called us about replacing their siding. But once we got on-site, the scope changed fast. The original cedar shake was shot, and the family had been wanting more space for years.

So instead of a simple re-side, we scoped a ground-up home addition with a three-season porch reframe, plus a complete exterior renovation so the old house and new structure would look like one building. One project. One crew.

The addition went up as a timber frame structure with steel connector brackets at every joint. The homeowners wanted exposed beams inside, and timber framing was the right call for the span they needed. We started in fall, racing daylight and watching the forecast every morning. After 20-plus years on the South Shore, you learn to plan for the weather, not around it.

Materials and Process

We sheathed the entire addition with ZIP System panels, an engineered sheathing with a built-in moisture barrier that replaces traditional plywood-plus-housewrap in one step. Every seam sealed with ZIP tape. For a coastal Massachusetts home taking nor’easters and freeze-thaw cycles, that kind of building envelope is non-negotiable.

The homeowners picked CertainTeed Midnight Blue vinyl siding for the whole house, not just the addition. That meant stripping the old cedar off the original structure and re-siding everything so nothing looked pieced together. CertainTeed Moire Black architectural shingles went on the addition to match the existing roof, and new windows went in throughout, each one flashed and sealed against the ZIP System sheathing. Roof to siding to windows to sheathing, all connected.
