Weymouth Home Addition & Exterior Renovation

Marshfield Charcoal Black Roof with 8 Velux Skylight Replacements

Project Summary: This Marshfield, MA roof replacement included a full tear-off, CertainTeed Charcoal Black architectural shingles, CertainTeed RoofRunner synthetic underlayment, Grace Select ice and water shield at the eaves and valleys, new ridge vents, and eight Velux skylights swapped in to replace the old units.

Why the Skylights Drove the Whole Job

The homeowners called us about a tired roof, but the real pressure point was the skylights. Eight of them across the main roof, all original, all past their service life. A couple were already weeping at the flashing. Re-shingling around old skylights is how leaks come back a year later, so we scoped the project as one job: new roof, new skylights, new flashing kits, all at once.

Marshfield sits close enough to the coast that salt air and nor’easter rain push any weak spot on a roof until it fails. On a roof with eight skylight penetrations, that is a lot of weak spots to get right. We planned the sequence so no opening stayed exposed overnight, and we watched the forecast every morning before the crew went up.

Materials and Process

Full tear-off down to the deck. The crew set tarps across the landscaping and the driveway before a single shingle came off, and a dumpster went in off the lawn so the beds stayed clean.

Once the deck was exposed, we ran Grace Select ice and water shield across the eaves, up every valley, and around each of the eight skylight curbs. CertainTeed RoofRunner synthetic underlayment covered the rest of the field. That two-layer underlayment stack is the barrier that actually keeps water out when wind-driven rain gets under the shingles.

The old Velux skylights came out one by one and new Velux units went in the same openings, each one set in a fresh flashing kit and tied into the underlayment before any shingle touched it. CertainTeed Charcoal Black architectural shingles went on the field, with new ridge vents along the peaks for attic ventilation. Because we are CertainTeed-certified installers, this project qualifies for extended warranty coverage you cannot get without the credential.
